Why an old Godrej is usually worth fixing
There is a particular category of call we get in Bengaluru: a Godrej single-door fridge, ten or fifteen years old, that has stopped cooling, and an owner who has already been told by somebody that it is finished. Often it is not, and the reason is worth explaining.
These are simple machines with available parts. A direct-cool Godrej has a compressor, a thermostat, a relay and overload protector, a door gasket and not much else. There is no evaporator fan, no defrost heater, no control board and nothing to lose communication with. Every one of those parts is still manufactured and inexpensive. When such a fridge stops cooling, the probability mass sits heavily on the thermostat and the relay — and a relay is a part you can hold between two fingers. Replacing one restores a fifteen-year-old fridge to full working order for a small fraction of the cost of a new appliance, and Godrej compressors from that era are genuinely long-lived.
The honest counter-case. There are two faults where we will advise against repair. One is a compressor that has actually seized on a very old unit — the part and the labour together approach the cost of a modern entry-level fridge, and the new one will use noticeably less electricity. The other is a refrigerant leak inside the evaporator, which on many of these is embedded in the cabinet wall and cannot be reached without destroying the liner. We will tell you which of those you have at the diagnosis visit, not after we have started.
The gasket is the most under-rated repair on the list. Rubber door seals harden and shrink with age. Once the seal is imperfect, warm room air leaks in continuously; the fridge runs almost permanently, ice builds on the cooling plate, the compartment still does not get properly cold and your electricity bill climbs. Owners live with this for years assuming the fridge is simply old. A gasket replacement is quick, cheap, and frequently the single highest-value thing we do to an ageing fridge.
On frost free Godrej models — the Eon and Insignia ranges — the fault list moves to the familiar defrost heater, defrost timer or sensor, and evaporator fan. Same progression as any frost-free fridge: cooling weakens over a couple of weeks, ice sheets the back wall of the freezer, then the fan begins to catch on the ice.

Check the door gasket. Hardened or shrunken rubber lets warm air in continuously, so the compressor never stops, ice builds on the cooling plate and the cabinet still stays warm. It also pushes your electricity bill up. A gasket replacement is inexpensive and is one of the highest-value repairs on an older fridge.
