Filterless is not maintenance-free — it moves the maintenance
Elica's filterless chimneys do away with the baffle or mesh filter entirely. Instead of catching grease in a filter you unclip and wash, the air is spun so that oil is thrown out by centrifugal force inside the blower housing and drains into a collector. The convenience is real: there is no filter to remove, scrub and refit every few weeks, and airflow does not degrade as a filter silts up. But the grease has not vanished — it has been relocated, and it still has to be cleaned out.
What that means in practice. On a filterless chimney the oil accumulates inside the blower housing and on the impeller itself. Left long enough it congeals into a hard varnish that unbalances the blower wheel, which shows up first as vibration and noise and later as reduced airflow. Because there is no filter to look at, there is no visual reminder that anything needs doing, and owners of filterless chimneys typically go far longer between services than owners of baffle-filter ones. The collector needs emptying regularly and the housing needs a proper deep clean periodically — more thoroughly than a filter chimney, not less, because when it does silt up the deposit is inside the mechanism rather than on a removable part.
Indian cooking is the variable. Daily tempering and deep frying put out far more aerosolised grease than the cooking these designs were originally optimised around. A filterless Elica in a household that fries daily needs its housing cleaned considerably more often than the manual's interval suggests. That is not a defect; it is a load the manual did not assume.
When suction drops, check outside the chimney first. This applies to every brand and it is the most over-diagnosed fault in the category. Every bend in the ducting and every additional metre of run costs airflow, so a chimney ducted the long way around a false ceiling with several elbows can lose much of its rated capacity to the installation rather than to any fault. The non-return flap at the outlet is the other classic: it seizes shut with congealed grease, and the chimney is then working against a sealed duct. Both are cheaper to fix than a motor and both are frequently mistaken for one.
Motor and electronics. A gradually worsening whine or rumble is bearings, and catching it early keeps it a bearing job. Elica's touch panels and remote-enabled models add an electronics fault path — a chimney that is silent with the panel still responding is more likely a PCB or motor capacitor issue than a dead motor, and that distinction is worth insisting on before a motor is quoted.

My chimney is filterless. Does it still need cleaning?
Yes, and arguably more carefully than a filter model. Filterless designs throw the grease into the blower housing and a collector rather than onto a removable filter. The oil still accumulates — it is just out of sight, which is exactly why these get neglected. The collector needs emptying regularly and the housing needs periodic deep cleaning.
The chimney has started vibrating and got noisier.
On a filterless model that is often congealed grease on the impeller unbalancing the blower wheel, which a deep clean resolves. If the noise is a rising whine rather than a vibration, it is more likely motor bearings — worth acting on early, because a seized bearing takes the motor with it.
Suction has dropped but there is no filter to clean.
Check the blower housing and collector first, then look outside the chimney. Duct length and every bend in the run cost airflow, and a non-return flap seized shut with congealed grease leaves the chimney blowing against a closed duct. Both are far cheaper than a motor and both are commonly misdiagnosed as one.
How often should a filterless Elica be serviced in Bengaluru?
For a household that fries and tempers daily, roughly every six months for a proper housing clean, with the oil collector emptied much more frequently than that. Indian cooking puts out considerably more aerosolised grease than these designs assume, so the manual's interval is usually optimistic here.
