Telling a motor fault from a grease problem
The motor is the most expensive component in a kitchen chimney, and like compressors and washing machine motors, it gets quoted more often than it fails. The distinction is usually straightforward once you know what to listen for.
Grease problems sound normal. A chimney choked with grease runs at its usual speed making its usual noise, and simply moves less air. If your chimney sounds exactly as it always did but pulls poorly, the motor is almost certainly fine and the blower wheel needs cleaning.
Motor problems sound wrong. Grinding, squealing, a rising and falling whine, or noticeably slower running with an audible change in pitch. Worn bearings produce a dry grinding or rumbling that gets worse over weeks. These are motor symptoms.
The capacitor. The single most common genuine electrical fault, and it is a small inexpensive part. A degraded run capacitor leaves the motor running slowly, struggling to start, or humming without turning at all. It is testable in minutes. Any quote for a chimney motor that does not mention the capacitor having been tested deserves a second opinion, because the price difference is substantial.
Bearings. Chimney motors run in a hot, greasy environment which is hard on bearings. Grease that has worked its way into the motor housing degrades the lubrication. Worn bearings give the characteristic grinding and eventually seize.
An unbalanced blower wheel wrecks bearings. This is the connection worth understanding: grease accumulating unevenly on the wheel makes it run out of balance, which puts continuous side load on the motor bearings and wears them out early. So a neglected chimney does eventually cause a genuine motor failure -- the cleaning you skipped is what killed the motor. It is also why replacing a motor without cleaning the wheel is a poor repair.
Speed switches and boards. A chimney stuck on one speed, or dead on one setting, is often the switch or control board rather than the motor.
