What auto-clean does, and the important thing it doesn't
Auto-clean is a genuinely useful feature that is routinely oversold. Understanding exactly what it does prevents the most common auto-clean problem, which is an owner who reasonably believed the appliance was cleaning itself.
How it works. An auto-clean chimney has a heating element in the oil collection area. Running a cycle warms the accumulated grease so it liquefies and drains into a removable collector cup. That is the whole mechanism. It is effective at what it does.
What it does not do. It does not clean the blower wheel. It does not clean the internal canopy surfaces or the duct entry. And it does not empty the collector cup -- that remains a manual job, and an auto-clean chimney whose cup has never been emptied will overflow oil back down onto the hob. The feature relocates grease to a convenient place; it does not remove it from the appliance.
The consequence. Auto-clean units frequently arrive with worse blower wheel buildup than conventional ones, because their owners were told the appliance self-cleans and never had it serviced. Suction falls off over a couple of years and the owner concludes the chimney is faulty. It is not -- it needs the same manual blower clean any other chimney needs.
Filterless designs. Many auto-clean models are also filterless, using centrifugal separation rather than baffle filters.
