How microwave door interlocks work, and why they fail safe
Every microwave has multiple independent switches operated by hooks on the door. Their job is to make it physically impossible for the magnetron to run with the door open, and they are deliberately designed so that any failure stops the appliance rather than allowing it to run unsafely. That is why a small worn plastic switch can render the whole microwave dead.
The symptoms are varied. A failed interlock can produce a microwave that does nothing at all, one that runs the light and turntable but never heats, one that starts and immediately stops, or one that blows its fuse the moment the door is closed. All of these trace back to the same small components.
The monitor switch. This is the clever and slightly brutal part of the design. One of the switches exists purely to check that the others have opened correctly. If it detects that a primary interlock has welded shut or failed to open, it deliberately creates a dead short that blows the main fuse instantly -- sacrificing the fuse to guarantee the magnetron cannot possibly run with the door open. So a microwave that blows a fuse every time you close the door is usually telling you an interlock has failed, and simply replacing the fuse without finding out which one will blow the new fuse too.
The latch hooks. The plastic hooks on the door that press the switches wear down and snap. This is a mechanical wear item, accelerated by slamming the door, and it is a common failure on microwaves used many times a day.
Door alignment. A door that has dropped on its hinges, or been bent by something heavy resting on it while open, will not press the switches fully. The switches are fine; the door is not reaching them.
Why this is not a DIY job. Reaching the interlocks means opening the cabinet, which puts you next to the high voltage capacitor. Beyond that, these components are a radiation safety system -- fitting the wrong switch, or bypassing one to 'get it working', removes the protection that stops microwave energy escaping while the door is open.
