In depth

What each filter does, and why the order they fail matters

A domestic RO purifier is a chain of filters, each protecting the one after it. Understanding that chain explains why skipping a cheap filter change ends up costing you an expensive membrane.

The sediment pre-filter. First in line, and it catches sand, silt, rust and suspended particles. In Bengaluru this filter works considerably harder than the design assumes, because a great deal of the city's supply is borewell or tanker water carrying real sediment load. When it clogs, flow drops and the pump strains. It is the cheapest filter in the system and it should be changed most often.

The pre-carbon filter. Removes chlorine, organic compounds and the taste and odour that come with them. Its most important job, though, is protecting the membrane: RO membranes are damaged by chlorine, permanently and quickly. A pre-carbon filter that has been left past its life stops absorbing chlorine, and the membrane behind it starts dying. This is the single most common reason membranes fail early.

The RO membrane. The expensive component, and the one that actually removes dissolved solids. It should last a couple of years or more if the filters ahead of it are maintained. It is covered properly on our membrane page.

The post-carbon filter. Sits after the membrane and polishes taste before the water reaches the tap. If your water has started tasting flat or slightly off but the TDS is fine, this is usually the one.

Intervals depend on your water, not the calendar. Manufacturers quote generic intervals, but a household on hard borewell water will exhaust a sediment filter far faster than one on treated corporation supply. We assess your actual input water and give you a realistic schedule rather than repeating the manual.

On generic filters. Cheaper generic cartridges exist and vary enormously in quality. A poorly made sediment filter is a minor risk; a poorly made pre-carbon filter that fails to remove chlorine will quietly kill your membrane. That is where we would advise not to economise.

FAQ

RO Filter Replacement in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.

How often should RO filters be replaced?

It depends on your input water rather than the calendar. Households on hard borewell or tanker water exhaust sediment filters considerably faster than those on treated corporation supply, so we assess your actual water and give you a realistic interval.

What happens if I skip filter changes?

Flow drops and the pump strains, but the real damage is to the membrane. Once the pre-carbon filter stops absorbing chlorine, the membrane behind it starts degrading permanently -- which is by far the most common cause of early membrane failure.

Are generic filters as good as branded ones?

Quality varies enormously. A cheap sediment filter is a minor risk, but a poorly made pre-carbon filter that fails to remove chlorine will quietly destroy your membrane. That is the one place we would advise against economising.

My water tastes flat but the TDS is fine. Which filter is it?

Usually the post-carbon filter, which sits after the membrane and polishes the taste before the water reaches the tap. It is an inexpensive cartridge and a straightforward replacement.

Can I replace the filters myself?

Some people do, but the housings need correct seating and O-ring condition to avoid leaks, and the system should be flushed and checked afterwards. Getting a filter housing slightly wrong is a common cause of the leaks we then get called out for.

90-day service warranty, on every job.

If the exact same fault returns within 90 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Replaced parts also carry the supplier's own part warranty on top.
