Reading your water: what TDS tells you and what it doesn't

TDS -- total dissolved solids -- is the standard measure of what is dissolved in your water, and a meter costs very little. It is the most useful diagnostic tool in domestic water purification, but it is also widely misunderstood, including by people selling purifiers.

What the numbers mean. The important measurement is not a single figure but the pair: input TDS and purified output TDS. A working membrane removes the large majority of dissolved solids. If your input is high and your output is close behind it, the membrane has failed. If output is very low and the water tastes flat, that is a different problem entirely.

Water that tastes salty or hard again. Rising output TDS. The membrane is the prime suspect, and it should be confirmed with a reading rather than assumed. Bengaluru's borewell supply often has genuinely high input TDS, which means membranes here work harder and are more sensitive to neglected pre-filters.

Water that tastes flat or bland. This is the opposite problem and a very common complaint. RO is thorough -- it removes beneficial minerals along with everything else, and water below a certain TDS tastes noticeably lifeless. Most purifiers address this with a TDS controller or blending valve that lets a small controlled amount of unpurified water rejoin the output, or with a mineral cartridge. If either is misadjusted, disconnected or exhausted, you get flat water. It is an adjustment, not usually a fault.

Water with an off smell or taste but normal TDS. TDS does not measure organic contamination, chlorine or bacteria -- this is its main limitation. An odd taste with good TDS readings usually points to an exhausted post-carbon filter, or to biofilm in a storage tank that has not been cleaned. Tanks do need periodic cleaning and it is routinely skipped.

Do not chase zero. Extremely low TDS is not a quality target. Water in a sensible range tastes better and is what the blending stage exists to produce.

FAQ

RO TDS Testing & Water Taste Problems in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.

What TDS reading should my purified water have?

There is no single right number -- what matters is the comparison between input and output. A working membrane removes the large majority of dissolved solids, so an output figure close to the input means the membrane has failed.

My RO water tastes flat and bland. Is something broken?

Usually not. RO removes beneficial minerals along with contaminants, and water below a certain TDS tastes lifeless. Most purifiers have a TDS controller, blending valve or mineral cartridge to correct this, and yours may need adjusting or replacing.

The water smells odd but the TDS is normal. What's wrong?

TDS does not measure organic contamination, chlorine or bacteria, which is its main limitation. An off smell with good readings usually means an exhausted post-carbon filter or biofilm in a storage tank that needs cleaning.

Is lower TDS always better?

No. Extremely low TDS is not a quality target and produces water that tastes flat. A sensible range tastes better, which is exactly what the blending or mineral stage in your purifier exists to achieve.

Does Bengaluru's water make membranes fail faster?

It can. Much of the city's borewell supply has genuinely high input TDS and sediment load, so membranes work harder here and are considerably more sensitive to pre-filters being left past their life.

90-day service warranty, on every job.

If the exact same fault returns within 90 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Replaced parts also carry the supplier's own part warranty on top.
