W2 Home Appliances is an independent multi-brand service centre. We are not an authorised AO Smith service centre and are not affiliated with, appointed by, or endorsed by A. O. Smith India Water Products Pvt. Ltd.. "AO Smith" and all other brand names are trademarks of their respective owners, used here only to describe the appliances we repair. If your unit is still inside the manufacturer warranty, use A. O. Smith India Water Products Pvt. Ltd.’s own service channel first — an outside repair can void that cover, and we will tell you so rather than take the job.

In depth

The anode rod: the part that decides how long your tank lasts

AO Smith is a water-heater specialist rather than a general appliance brand, and it markets its tanks hard — glass-lined, long warranty, built to last. All of that is true, and it rests on a component most owners have never heard of.

Inside every glass-lined storage tank is a sacrificial anode rod, usually magnesium. Its job is electrochemical: it corrodes preferentially so that the steel tank does not. Any imperfection in the glass lining — and there are always some — would otherwise become a rust site, and the anode protects those sites by giving the corrosion something easier to attack. It is consumed doing this. On hard water it is consumed faster. Once it is gone, the tank itself starts corroding, and a corroded tank is not repairable at any price: the geyser is finished.

Nobody replaces it, and that is why tanks fail. An anode rod is an inexpensive part. Checking it every few years and replacing it when depleted is the single highest-value thing anyone can do to a storage water heater, and in fifteen years of these call-outs we have almost never met a household that has had it done. Most tank-leak calls we attend are geysers whose anode was exhausted years earlier. It is also worth reading your warranty terms on this point, because tank warranties are commonly conditional on the anode having been maintained — which means the long warranty AO Smith advertises may not apply to a tank that has never been serviced.

The heating element is the routine failure, and hard water sets the interval. The element sits in the water and scales over in Bengaluru's borewell-fed areas. Scale insulates it, so it runs hotter to deliver the same heat, and eventually the sheath cracks and it fails. The progression is recognisable: water takes longer and longer to heat over some months, then one day there is none. Descaling the element and the tank at the same time is what makes a replacement last.

If it trips the MCB, stop using it. A geyser that trips the breaker or gives the faintest tingle at the tap has an earth leakage, almost always a failed element letting current into the water. That is a genuine electrocution risk and not something to keep resetting. Switch it off at the isolator and call someone. It is a cheap repair and an extremely serious symptom.

The pressure relief valve is the other ignored part. It is a safety device that must be able to release pressure. In hard water it seizes with scale. A seized PRV on a tank is dangerous, and it costs very little to replace.

FAQ

AO Smith Geyser Repair in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.

Is W2 an authorised AO Smith service centre?

No. We are an independent multi-brand service centre with no affiliation to or appointment from A. O. Smith India. If your geyser is inside its warranty — particularly the tank warranty, which runs for years — use AO Smith's own service channel, because an outside repair can affect that cover.

What is an anode rod and does mine need replacing?

It is a sacrificial magnesium rod inside the tank that corrodes so the steel tank does not. It is consumed over time, faster on hard water, and once gone the tank begins rusting from the inside. Almost nobody replaces it, which is why tanks fail. If yours has never been checked and the geyser is more than a few years old, it is very likely due.

My geyser trips the MCB. Can I keep resetting it?

No — switch it off at the isolator and stop using it. Tripping usually means the heating element has failed in a way that lets current into the water, which is an electrocution risk, not an inconvenience. It is an inexpensive repair and a genuinely serious symptom, and it should not be reset and lived with.

The water takes much longer to heat than it used to.

That is scale on the heating element, and it is the standard progression in Bengaluru's hard-water areas. Scale insulates the element so it delivers less heat into the water while working harder itself, until it eventually fails. Descaling the element and the tank together is what makes the repair last rather than recur.

My tank is leaking. Can it be repaired?

No. A leaking storage tank means the steel has corroded through, and there is no safe or lasting repair — the geyser needs replacing. We will confirm it is genuinely the tank rather than a fitting, nipple or the pressure relief valve, because those look identical from outside and are all inexpensive fixes.

90-day service warranty, on every job.

If the exact same fault returns within 90 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Replaced parts also carry the supplier's own part warranty on top.
