A filled storage geyser is heavy -- considerably heavier than the empty unit people judge by when choosing a spot. Add mains electricity, water under pressure, and a bathroom environment, and the case for doing this properly makes itself.

The wall has to take the load. A 25-litre geyser holds 25kg of water on top of its own weight, all cantilevered off a wall bracket. Solid concrete or brick is straightforward. Hollow clay block and lightweight partition walls -- common in newer Bengaluru apartments -- need appropriate anchors and sometimes a spreader plate, and some genuinely will not take a large unit safely. Establishing this before drilling is the first step.

The pressure relief valve is not optional. Every storage geyser needs one, correctly rated and correctly oriented, with its discharge directed somewhere safe. It is the device that prevents a sealed vessel of heating water becoming dangerous if the thermostat and cut-out both fail. Installations that omit it, cap it, or point it somewhere that will scald someone are unfortunately not rare.

Electrical work. A geyser should be on an adequately rated circuit with proper earthing and earth leakage protection. Given that the element failing to earth is one of the two normal end-of-life failure modes, that ELCB is what stands between a routine fault and an electric shock in a wet room. Running a geyser off a shared lighting circuit or an unearthed socket is not acceptable.

An isolation valve on the inlet. Small detail, real convenience. Without it, every future service means shutting off water to the whole bathroom or flat.

Storage or instant? Instant heaters are compact and suit a handwash basin or a single quick shower, but they cannot supply a bucket or a long shower. Storage units suit normal bathroom use. Sizing sensibly matters more than brand: an undersized tank runs out mid-shower, an oversized one wastes energy keeping water hot that nobody uses.

Commissioning. The tank must be filled completely before power is applied -- switching on a dry element destroys it in seconds. That single mistake accounts for a fair number of brand-new geysers failing on day one.
