Why \"the compressor is gone\" is often the wrong diagnosis

Low refrigerant strain. Running for extended periods with low gas can cause a compressor to overheat and its internal protection to cut it out repeatedly. In this case, the compressor isn't actually faulty -- fixing the underlying gas leak resolves the symptom.
When it genuinely is the compressor. Signs include the compressor not starting at all despite good capacitor, overload and refrigerant readings, unusual electrical readings across its windings, or visible physical damage.
