The real causes of AC water leakage, and how each is actually fixed
Water leaking from an AC indoor unit gets blamed on 'the gas' more often than it should -- in most cases in Bengaluru homes, the actual cause is much simpler and cheaper to fix. Here's how a technician actually narrows it down.
Blocked drain pipe. This is the single most common cause. The thin drain pipe that carries condensate water away from the indoor unit collects dust, algae and debris over time and eventually clogs, so water backs up and overflows inside the unit instead of draining outside. The fix is clearing the line, sometimes with a simple vacuum-suction tool -- quick, and it's the first thing checked.
Dirty filter causing ice buildup. A heavily clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil, which can cause the coil to ice over. When that ice eventually melts faster than the drain pan can handle, it looks exactly like a leak. Cleaning the filter and letting any ice fully melt before restarting the unit is often enough to resolve this on its own.
Installation tilt. Indoor units are meant to be mounted with a very slight tilt toward the drain side, so gravity does the work of moving condensate to the drain pan. If a unit was installed level or tilted the wrong way -- common with rushed installations -- water pools and eventually overflows. This needs the mounting corrected, not just a one-off wipe-down.
Low refrigerant causing icing. Low gas pressure can cause the evaporator coil to run too cold and ice over, which then melts and leaks the same way a dirty filter does. This is diagnosed with a gauge test and treated as a gas issue, not a drainage one -- refilling gas (after a leak check) fixes it, not just clearing the drain.
