What separates a proper AC installation from a rushed one
Installation is where most of an AC's long-term reliability is decided. A unit installed badly can run inefficiently, leak, or develop faults within the first year even though nothing is wrong with the AC itself. Here's what a proper installation actually involves.
Mounting and placement. The indoor unit needs a wall section that can bear its weight long-term, positioned for even airflow across the room -- not just wherever's closest to an existing hole. The outdoor unit needs stable, level ground or bracket mounting, with enough clearance around it for the condenser fan to exchange heat properly; a boxed-in outdoor unit runs hotter and less efficiently for the life of the AC.
Piping and vacuuming. Copper pipe runs connect indoor and outdoor units, and every joint is a potential future leak point, so shorter, cleaner runs with proper insulation matter. Before gas is charged, the line has to be vacuumed to remove air and moisture -- skipping this step is one of the most common corner-cutting shortcuts in cheap installations, and it causes cooling problems and compressor strain that only show up months later.
Drainage. The drain pipe needs a consistent downward slope so condensate flows out and away from the wall, not pooling or leaking back indoors. This is a five-minute check during installation and a much bigger job to fix afterward once the unit is mounted and the wall is finished around it.
Gas charging and testing. Refrigerant is charged to the exact specification for that model and pipe length -- not a generic top-up -- then cooling performance, drainage and electrical draw are tested with the unit running before the technician leaves.
All of this is included in the installation visit; it isn't sold as a separate add-on afterward. If your wall or electrical setup needs extra work, that's flagged and quoted upfront, not discovered halfway through.
Timing your installation.
