Sound but no picture: how to tell a cheap fault from an expensive one
If your TV plays sound normally but the screen stays black, the good news is that the most likely cause is one of the cheaper repairs, not the one everybody fears. The panel itself is rarely at fault. Here is how the diagnosis actually goes.
The torch test. Before anything is opened, shine a bright torch at a sharp angle onto the dark screen while the TV is on and playing. If you can faintly make out the picture or the menu, the panel and all the signal electronics are working perfectly -- only the backlight that illuminates them has failed. That single test separates a straightforward repair from a serious one, and you can do it yourself in ten seconds.
The backlight LED strips. This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Modern LED TVs light the panel with strips of LEDs behind it, wired in series. When individual LEDs fail, the string opens and the whole backlight goes out. Replacing the strips is a standard job -- it requires opening the panel assembly carefully, which is skilled work, but the parts are not expensive.
The LED driver section. The power board contains a section that steps voltage up to drive those LED strips. When it fails, healthy strips receive nothing. Symptoms are identical to failed strips, which is why both get tested rather than one being assumed.
The T-Con board. This board takes the video signal and drives the panel's rows and columns. T-Con failures usually produce a distorted, inverted or half-missing image rather than pure black, and sometimes a white screen. It is a replaceable board.
The panel itself. Genuine panel failure -- internal cracking, delamination, failed row drivers -- is the expensive outcome, because a replacement panel typically costs more than a comparable new TV. When that is the diagnosis we will tell you plainly rather than sell you a repair that does not make economic sense.
A useful clue: if the screen shows a very dim image only in a completely dark room, that is backlight, not panel. If there is a bright flash at switch-on that immediately dies, that is usually the LED driver protecting itself.

TV No Display Repair in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.
My TV has sound but no picture. Is the screen gone?
Usually not. The most common cause is a failed backlight rather than a failed panel. Shine a torch at the screen at an angle while it is on -- if you can faintly see the picture, the panel is fine and only the lighting behind it has failed.
What is the torch test and can I do it myself?
Yes, it takes ten seconds. With the TV on and playing, shine a bright torch onto the dark screen at a sharp angle. A faintly visible image means the panel and signal boards work and only the backlight is out, which is a far cheaper repair.
Is replacing the LED backlight strips worth it?
In most cases yes. The strips themselves are inexpensive and the work is a standard job for a technician. It is one of the more worthwhile TV repairs, particularly on a set that is otherwise sound.
When is a TV not worth repairing?
When the panel itself has genuinely failed. A replacement panel usually costs more than a comparable new television, so it is almost never economic. We will tell you when that is the diagnosis rather than quote work that does not make sense.
The screen flashes on briefly then goes black. What's that?
That pattern usually points to the LED driver section of the power board shutting down protectively, often because one of the backlight strings has an open circuit. Both the driver and the strips get tested to find which is at fault.
90-day service warranty, on every job.
If the exact same fault returns within 90 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Replaced parts also carry the supplier's own part warranty on top.
