In depth

The TV won't turn on: reading the standby light

When a television is completely unresponsive, the power supply -- the SMPS board -- is the first place to look. It is also one of the more satisfying repairs, because these boards fail in predictable ways and are frequently repairable at component level rather than needing wholesale replacement.

Start with the standby light. It tells you a great deal before anything is opened. No light at all usually means the power supply is producing nothing -- a blown fuse, a failed primary section, or no mains reaching the set. A steady standby light that never responds to the remote or the panel button suggests the standby rail is alive but the main rails are not coming up, or the mainboard is not starting. A blinking light is often a deliberate error code, and the blink pattern differs by brand -- counting the blinks is genuinely useful information to give us when booking.

Capacitors. Electrolytic capacitors are the classic failure on power boards. They dry out with heat over years and their tops visibly bulge or leak. Bengaluru's ambient warmth and TVs mounted in poorly ventilated recesses both accelerate this. Replacing a handful of capacitors is inexpensive and frequently restores a board completely -- this is exactly the kind of repair that gets skipped in favour of selling a whole board.

Surge damage. A mains spike takes out the primary side -- fuse, rectifier, switching transistor. Where the supply is unstable this is a recurring theme, and it is the argument for a stabiliser or a decent surge protector. A board that has been repaired once and then fails again the same way is usually telling you about your supply, not about the repair.

The backlight driver. On many sets the LED driver shares the power board. When it fails you get sound and a black screen rather than a dead set, which is why this board also comes up in no-display diagnosis.

Power board or mainboard? A set that is dead can be either. Measuring the supply rails under load settles it quickly, and it matters because the two differ substantially in cost.

FAQ

TV Power Supply & SMPS Repair in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.

My TV won't turn on at all. Where do you start?

With the standby light. No light usually means the power supply is producing nothing; a steady light that ignores the remote suggests the standby rail works but the main rails do not; a blinking light is often a brand-specific error code.

Can a TV power board be repaired rather than replaced?

Frequently, yes. Failed electrolytic capacitors are the classic fault and replacing a handful of them is inexpensive and often restores the board completely. It is one of the more genuinely repairable boards in a television.

What causes TV power supplies to fail?

Heat drying out capacitors over years is the most common cause, accelerated by poor ventilation behind wall-mounted sets. Mains surges are the other major cause and tend to take out the primary side components.

My TV blinks a number of times and won't start. Does that mean anything?

Yes -- on most brands the blink pattern is a deliberate error code identifying which section has failed. Counting the blinks and telling us the number when you book genuinely speeds up the diagnosis.

Will a stabiliser stop this happening again?

It helps considerably where the supply is unstable, since surges damage the primary side of the power board. If a board has already failed once from a surge, protection costs far less than the second repair will.

90-day service warranty, on every job.

If the exact same fault returns within 90 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Replaced parts also carry the supplier's own part warranty on top.
