The panel is the single most expensive component in a television -- typically well over half the cost of the whole set when bought as a spare. That fact drives everything about this repair, and any technician who does not lead with it is not being straight with you.

Physical damage is almost never economic to repair. A cracked or impacted screen means a new panel, and by the time you add the panel cost, labour and the risk of damaging other components during the swap, you are usually past the price of a comparable new television. There is no repair for a cracked LCD or LED panel -- the liquid crystal layer and the glass are a sealed assembly. Anyone offering to 'fix' a cracked screen cheaply is not doing what you think they are.

But make sure it really is the panel. Several faults look like panel failure and are not. Vertical or horizontal lines across the picture are frequently a loose or failed ribbon cable between the T-Con board and the panel, or a T-Con fault -- both far cheaper. A picture with the colours inverted or badly distorted is usually T-Con. Half the screen black, with the other half normal, can be a failed row driver but can equally be a connection. These deserve proper testing before the panel is condemned.

Dead or stuck pixels. A handful of dead pixels is not a repairable fault; it is a manufacturing characteristic, and manufacturers publish thresholds below which they will not accept a warranty claim. Spreading patches of dead pixels indicate a failing panel.

On larger and more premium sets the maths occasionally does work out. On mid-range sets it very rarely does.

Before you replace the set. If you are moving to a new TV, it is worth knowing that the old panel has no meaningful salvage value but the boards sometimes do.
