Getting a TV on the wall safely: what actually matters
Wall mounting looks like a simple job and mostly is -- but the failures, when they happen, are expensive and occasionally dangerous. Almost all of them trace back to the fixings being wrong for the wall.
The wall is the whole question. A solid concrete or dense brick wall will hold almost anything with the right anchors. Hollow clay block and lightweight partition walls -- both common in newer Bengaluru apartments -- will not hold a standard expansion anchor under a cantilevered load, and a full-motion arm multiplies that load substantially as it extends. Drywall requires proper toggle fixings or, better, mounting into the studs behind. The first thing a competent installer does is establish what they are drilling into, not start drilling.
VESA compatibility. The mounting holes on the back of a TV follow the VESA standard, given as a spacing in millimetres. The bracket has to match, and larger TVs need brackets rated for both the pattern and the weight. Using bolts that are too long is a genuine hazard on some sets -- they can press against internal components behind the mounting bosses.
Mount type changes the load. A fixed flat mount holds the TV close to the wall and imposes the least stress. A tilt mount is similar. A full-motion articulating arm is the most useful and the most demanding: at full extension the leverage on the wall fixings is many times higher than the TV's weight alone.
Height and angle. The common mistake is mounting too high. Above a fireplace or high on a wall looks tidy and gives you neck strain. Seated eye level to the centre of the screen is the right target for a living room.
Cables and power. Plan where the power socket and source devices sit before drilling. Cables can be run inside trunking, or concealed within the wall where construction allows. Retrofitting this after the TV is mounted is far more disruptive.
