Televisions are the appliance where the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive fault is widest, and there is a simple test that tells you which side of that gap you are on. Do it before you book anyone, including us.
The torch test. If your TV has sound but a black screen, shine a bright torch onto the dark screen at a sharp angle while the set is on and playing. If you can faintly make out the picture or the menus, the panel and all the signal electronics are working -- only the backlight behind them has failed. That is a repair genuinely worth doing. If the screen is completely lifeless under a torch, the fault is more serious and may not be economic.
Why this matters when choosing who to call. A panel replacement typically costs more than a comparable new television, so an honest technician will sometimes tell you not to repair. If someone quotes you a panel without having tested the backlight and the T-Con board first, that is a reason to get a second opinion.
