Bosch faults: the cheap ones and the ones worth thinking about
Bosch front loaders are built around the EcoSilence Drive — a brushless motor with no carbon brushes to wear out — and they are, on the whole, the most reliable machines we work on. That reliability changes what a repair conversation should sound like. The failure rate is low enough that when a Bosch does break, the owner has usually had it long enough to be weighing repair against replacement, and Bosch parts cost more and occasionally take longer to source than LG or Samsung equivalents. Being straight about which fault you have is worth more here than anywhere else.
E18 is the one everybody gets wrong, and it is nearly free. E18 means the machine could not drain within its allowed time. It is by a wide margin the most common Bosch code we are called for, and it is very rarely a failed pump. Behind the small hatch at the bottom-front there is a filter and an impeller housing, and it fills with lint, coins, hairclips and the underwiring out of bras. The pump runs, moves nothing, times out, and posts E18. Anyone can open that flap in ten minutes with a towel and a shallow tray. We would rather tell you that than charge you a visit for it, and if you call us with an E18 that is the first thing we will ask you to try.
F16 is the door, and it is a wear part. The interlock has to confirm closed before the machine will start and stay locked through the spin. It is cycled daily for years and it eventually fails. Cheap part, contained job. Before replacing it we check the hinge, because a door that has dropped a couple of millimetres over time misaligns the catch and produces exactly the same fault with a perfectly good lock.
F21 and E02 deserve a proper diagnosis. Both point at the motor circuit. On older brushed Bosch models F21 is very often just worn carbon brushes — a genuinely cheap consumable that restores the machine completely. On EcoSilence Drive models there are no brushes, so the same code moves the suspicion to the hall sensor, the harness or the inverter section of the board. Those three are all substantially cheaper than the motor, and the motor is almost never the actual failure. Insist they are tested individually.
AquaStop is a feature, not a fault. Bosch inlet hoses contain a mechanical valve that shuts the water off if it detects a leak. Once tripped it stays shut, and the machine reports a fill failure that looks like a dead inlet valve. The hose has to be replaced rather than reset. It is worth knowing this exists before someone charges you for a valve that was never broken.

What your Bosch error code is telling you.
These are the codes we are called out for most often. A code names the circuit that failed a self-test — it is a starting point for diagnosis, not a part order, and the same code can have a ₹0 cause and a ₹6,000 cause.
E18 — Not draining
The drain timed out. Almost always the pump filter behind the bottom-front hatch, not the pump itself. Clear the impeller housing and the code goes. This is a job most owners can do themselves in ten minutes.
F16 — Door not closed
The interlock has not confirmed the door shut. Check nothing is caught in the seal, then expect the lock — but have the hinge checked too, because a dropped door misaligns the catch and mimics a lock failure exactly.
F21 — Motor fault
A motor-circuit fault. On older brushed models this is usually worn carbon brushes, which are cheap and fully restore the machine. On EcoSilence Drive models suspect the hall sensor, harness or inverter board before the motor.
E02 — Motor not turning
The motor failed to reach speed. Same diagnostic order as F21 — brushes on older units, sensor and board on brushless ones. A drum jammed by a trapped item produces this too, so the drum gets turned by hand first.
E23 — Leak detected
The base-tray float has been triggered by water. Turn the tap off. The source is often a perished sump hose or a cracked dispenser housing rather than the tub, but it needs finding before the machine runs again.
F43 — Drum not turning
The board commanded rotation and did not detect it. Something jamming the drum, a failed sensor, or a drive fault. Do not repeat-start the cycle — repeated stall attempts are what damages the board.
E32 / F34 — Door lock circuit
The lock circuit is faulty rather than simply open. Distinguishes a failed interlock from a door that is genuinely ajar, which is useful — it means checking the seal will not help.

My Bosch shows E18. Can I fix it myself?
Very often, yes. E18 is a drain timeout and the usual cause is the pump filter behind the small hatch at the bottom-front. Put a towel and a shallow tray down first because water will come out, unscrew the filter, clear the impeller housing, refit. If the code returns immediately after a clean filter, then the pump itself needs looking at.
F21 came up — is the motor gone?

The machine will not fill and the inlet hose has a red marker showing.
That is AquaStop — a safety valve built into the Bosch inlet hose that shuts off permanently if it detects a leak. It cannot be reset; the hose is replaced. Worth knowing, because the symptom looks exactly like a failed inlet valve and is sometimes billed as one.
