Three ways a drain pump fails, and how to tell them apart
The drain pump does one job -- push water out at the end of the cycle -- and it does it hundreds of times a year through water full of lint, hair and detergent residue. It is a genuine wear part. But it also gets replaced unnecessarily, because two of its three failure modes are not really pump failures at all.
Blocked filter: not a pump fault. The filter sits ahead of the pump specifically to catch debris, and on a machine that has never had it cleaned it becomes a solid felt of lint bound with detergent scum, often with a small collection of coins and hair clips. Water cannot reach the pump. The pump is fine. Cleaning the filter is the entire repair, and it is designed to be done by the owner.
Jammed impeller: not a pump fault either, usually. The impeller is a small plastic propeller behind the filter. A coin, a button or a bra underwire that got past the filter can wedge between the impeller blades and the housing so it physically cannot rotate. The distinctive symptom is a pump you can clearly hear humming or buzzing without any water moving -- the motor is energised and straining against a blockage. Removing the object restores normal function, though an impeller that has been forced against an obstruction repeatedly can be chipped and then does need replacing.
Failed pump motor: a genuine pump fault. After several years the pump motor windings fail or the bearing seizes. Here you get silence -- no hum, no movement -- or an intermittent operation that gets steadily worse. This is confirmed with a meter rather than by ear, and it is the case where a replacement pump is genuinely the right answer. Pumps are among the less expensive parts on a washing machine.
A note on noise. A pump that has always been a bit loud is normal; they are not quiet components. A pump that has recently become loud is usually telling you about debris in the housing rather than impending failure.

How do I know if the drain pump needs replacing?
