Reading the noise: which sounds are cheap and which are not
Washing machine noise is unusually diagnosable, because different faults produce genuinely different sounds at different points in the cycle. Describing the noise accurately gets you a long way before anyone opens anything.
Violent banging on a recently moved machine: transit bolts. Every new machine ships with steel bolts locking the drum so it cannot swing in transit, and they are supposed to be removed on installation. They frequently are not -- or they get refitted when a household moves and then forgotten. A machine running with transit bolts in place shakes hard enough to walk across the floor and will damage itself in short order. This is free to fix and one of the first things we check on any machine that has moved recently.
Rocking and walking: levelling. Machines have adjustable feet for a reason. On the uneven floors common in older Bengaluru buildings, a machine that is not properly levelled and locked will rock on spin. Correcting it is a five-minute job with a spirit level.
Rumbling or grinding that worsens on spin: drum bearings. This is the expensive one. Bearing noise starts subtle, gets louder over months, and is at its worst at high spin speed. It is worth catching early -- a failing bearing eventually damages the drum shaft and seal, which turns a repair into a replacement conversation.
Metallic rattle or clunking on the drum: something trapped. Coins, keys, underwires and buttons find their way between the inner drum and the outer tub. It sounds alarming and costs nothing but access time to fix. Checking pockets genuinely prevents this.
Knocking that got worse gradually: shock absorbers. The dampers that control drum movement wear out and stop absorbing. The drum then hits its travel limits and knocks, particularly at the start and end of a spin.
Squealing or chirping: belt or pulley. A glazed belt slipping on the pulley squeals, most audibly as the drum accelerates.

My machine shakes violently and moves across the floor. What causes that?
If the machine was recently installed or moved, the transit bolts are the first suspect -- they lock the drum for transport and must be removed. Otherwise it is usually levelling, or worn shock absorbers letting the drum swing too far.
What does a worn drum bearing sound like?
A rumbling or grinding that is loudest at high spin speed and has been getting gradually worse over weeks or months. Unlike a trapped object, it is continuous rather than intermittent and it does not come and go with different loads.
Is it safe to keep using a noisy washing machine?
It depends on the noise. A trapped coin or an unlevel machine is not urgent. A bearing rumble is worth attending to promptly, because continuing to run it damages the shaft and seal and can turn a repair into a replacement.
Why is my machine noisy only with certain loads?
That points to load balance rather than a mechanical fault. Single heavy items like bedsheets, curtains or floor mats bunch to one side and make the drum swing unevenly. Adding a couple of towels to balance the load usually settles it.
Can transit bolts really be the problem years after installation?
Yes, if the machine has been moved since. Bolts often get refitted for a house move and then never removed at the new home, so a machine that was quiet for years starts shaking hard immediately after relocating.
