Water left in the drum: what a technician checks, in order

A machine that won't empty is a mechanical problem far more often than an electronic one. The water has a physical path out, and something is almost always sitting in that path. Here is the order a technician works through it.

The drain pump filter. Most machines have a small accessible filter behind a flap at the front bottom, and on a machine that has never had it cleaned it is remarkable what comes out -- coins, hair clips, buttons, safety pins, and a felt of lint bound together with detergent residue. This single item accounts for a large share of drainage complaints. It is designed to be user-serviceable and is supposed to be cleaned every few months, which almost nobody does.

A jammed impeller. Behind the filter sits the pump impeller, a small plastic propeller. A coin or a bra underwire that got past the filter can wedge it so it cannot turn. You will often hear the pump humming without any water movement, which is the classic signature of a jam rather than a dead pump.

A failed pump motor. If the impeller spins freely and the filter is clear, the pump itself may have failed. This is a straightforward replacement part on almost every brand, and it is a genuinely common wear item after several years of use.

The outlet hose or the household drain. The hose behind the machine kinks easily when the machine is pushed back against a wall, and the standpipe or floor drain it empties into can itself be blocked. This one is worth checking before anyone opens the machine, because the fault may not be in the machine at all.

The pressure switch. This is the sensor that tells the control board how much water is in the drum. When it fails, the machine can believe the drum is already empty and never call for the pump at all -- or believe it is still full and refuse to move on. It is the least common of these causes but the one most often misdiagnosed as a control board fault.

Before any of this, run the machine on a drain or spin-only cycle. If the pump never makes a sound at all, the fault is electrical; if it runs but nothing moves, the fault is a blockage.

FAQ

Washing Machine Not Draining Repair in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.

Why is water still in the drum after the cycle finishes?

The most likely cause is a blocked drain pump filter -- lint, coins and hair clips collect there and eventually stop the flow. A jammed pump impeller, a kinked outlet hose or a blocked household drain are the next things to check.

Can I drain the machine myself before the technician arrives?

Yes, and it helps. Switch the machine off at the wall, put a shallow tray and towels down, and open the filter flap at the front bottom slowly -- there will be several litres. Draining it first makes the visit quicker and cleaner.

How often should the drain filter be cleaned?

Every two to three months for a machine in regular family use. It takes a few minutes and prevents most drainage problems from ever developing, along with a good share of the smells people blame on the machine itself.

The pump makes a humming noise but nothing drains. What does that mean?

That usually means the pump motor is getting power but the impeller is physically jammed, most often by a coin or an underwire that slipped past the filter. Clearing the obstruction generally restores it without needing a new pump.

Could this be a control board problem?

It can be, but it is by far the least likely explanation and should only be considered after the filter, impeller, hose and pressure switch have all been ruled out. A board should never be the first thing quoted for a drainage fault.

90-day service warranty, on every job.

If the exact same fault returns within 90 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Replaced parts also carry the supplier's own part warranty on top.
