What an error code actually tells you, and what it doesn't
Modern washing machines self-diagnose and report a code on the display. That is genuinely useful, but it is widely misread. A code names the function the machine could not complete -- it does not name the broken part. The distinction matters, because most codes have several possible causes at wildly different prices.
Drain-related codes. These are the most frequent across every brand, and they almost never mean the pump is dead. The machine timed out waiting for the water level to fall, and a blocked filter, jammed impeller or kinked hose produces exactly the same code as a genuinely failed pump. Clearing a blockage clears the code.
Door and lid codes. The machine cannot confirm the door is secured. Sometimes the door genuinely is not latching because the catch or the hinge has dropped; sometimes the interlock itself has failed electrically; occasionally laundry is trapped in the seal. All three read as the same fault.
Fill and water level codes. The machine did not reach its target level in the expected time. Around Bengaluru this is very often nothing to do with the machine at all -- low supply pressure, a closed or half-open inlet tap, or an inlet mesh filter silted up with the sediment that hard borewell water carries. The valve itself is usually fine.
Motor and tacho codes. The board is not seeing the drum turn at the speed it commanded. Worn brushes, a failing capacitor or a slipping belt all produce that mismatch, and so does a genuine motor fault. The board is reporting a discrepancy, not a diagnosis.
Board and communication codes. These are the ones worth being sceptical about, because a replacement board is the most expensive part on most machines. A board should only be replaced after the sensors and wiring it depends on have been tested and cleared -- a bad connector or a chafed harness can produce a convincing board fault at a fraction of the cost.

Does an error code tell you exactly which part is broken?
No. A code identifies the function the machine could not complete -- draining, filling, locking, reaching speed -- and each of those has several possible causes at very different prices. It narrows the search rather than ending it.
My front-load door won't open and shows an error. What do I do?
Do not force it. There is usually still water inside, which is why the interlock is holding. Drain the machine through the filter flap at the front bottom first; many door locks release once the drum is empty and the machine has been switched off for a few minutes.
Will switching the machine off and on clear the fault?
It clears the displayed code, and if the cause was transient -- a one-off supply dip, a momentary imbalance -- it may not return. If the same code comes back on the next cycle, the underlying fault is real and needs diagnosis.
Should I replace the control board if the code points to it?
Not without testing first. Boards are the most expensive part on most machines, and faulty sensors, corroded connectors or damaged wiring frequently produce codes that look like board failures. The board should be confirmed dead, not assumed.
Do error codes mean the same thing on every brand?
No -- the tables are entirely brand-specific, so an identical code means different things on IFB, LG, Samsung, Bosch and Whirlpool machines. Mentioning the exact code and the brand when you book lets the technician arrive better prepared.
