Semi-automatic machines have two tubs -- one to wash, one to spin -- and mechanical timer knobs rather than a control board. They are simple, tolerant of poor water supply and cheap to repair. Their usual failures are the spin motor, the wash motor, the mechanical timers themselves, and the drain hose. Because there is no board, there is no expensive electronic failure to worry about, which is a large part of why they remain popular.
Fully automatic top-loaders do everything in one tub under electronic control, and add a few specific failure points.
The lid switch. This tells the machine the lid is closed, and the machine will not spin without it. It is a small mechanical switch operated every single cycle, so it wears out. A machine that washes but never spins very often just needs a lid switch.
The clutch and gearbox. This is the mechanism that lets the drum agitate slowly in wash and then spin fast, and it is the characteristic top-loader wear item. A worn clutch produces weak or absent spin, sometimes with a burning smell or a slipping sound. It is a more involved repair than a lid switch but far from the most expensive thing on the machine.
The pulsator. The rotating plate at the bottom of the drum that moves the water. Its splines strip over time, or something gets underneath it, and then it turns without moving the laundry -- clothes come out barely washed even though everything sounds normal.
Residue and scale. Top-loaders use a lot of water, and with Bengaluru's hardness that means scale and detergent residue collecting under the pulsator and around the tub. It causes smell and reduced wash quality, and periodic cleaning is genuine maintenance rather than an upsell.
