In depth

Why a bad door seal costs more than it looks like it should

The door gasket does one job: keep warm, humid room air out. When it stops doing that job properly, nothing dramatic happens -- which is exactly why it gets ignored for years while quietly costing money every single day.

What a failed seal actually causes. Warm air leaks in continuously, so the compressor runs far longer to hold temperature. That shows up on the electricity bill and shortens compressor life. The humidity in that air condenses and freezes on the cold surfaces, producing heavy frost buildup in the freezer and water pooling in the fridge. In Bengaluru's humid months this happens noticeably faster than a manufacturer's temperate-climate assumptions would suggest.

The paper test. Close the door on a sheet of paper so half is inside and half out, then pull. You should feel firm resistance. Repeat every few inches all the way around all doors. Gaskets almost never fail uniformly -- typically one section, most often near the hinge or along the bottom, goes first while the rest still grips fine. A single weak section is enough to cause the whole problem.

Cleaning before replacing. A surprising number of 'failed' gaskets are simply dirty. Food residue, spills and sticky buildup in the folds stop the rubber from making contact. Washing the gasket with warm soapy water and drying it thoroughly restores plenty of them. This is worth doing before anyone quotes a part.

The magnetic strip. Most gaskets have a magnetic strip inside that pulls the door closed. It can lose strength or shift within its channel, and sometimes it can be repositioned rather than replaced.

Alignment and levelling. A door that has dropped on its hinges, or a fridge tilted forward on uneven flooring, will not close squarely no matter how good the gasket is. Correcting the tilt so the fridge sits very slightly back means the door swings shut under its own weight, which is how it was designed to work.

When it needs replacing. A gasket that is hardened, cracked, torn or permanently deformed will not recover with cleaning. Replacement is brand and model specific but is a routine, reasonably priced job -- and it pays for itself in running cost on a fridge that is otherwise sound.

FAQ

Fridge Door Seal & Gasket Replacement in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.

How do I know if my fridge door seal has failed?

Use the paper test -- shut the door on a sheet of paper and pull. If it slides out without resistance anywhere around the door, the seal has failed at that point. Heavy frost buildup and water inside the cabinet are the other giveaways.

Does a bad door seal really increase the electricity bill?

Yes, and it is the main reason to fix it. Warm air leaking in continuously means the compressor runs far longer to hold temperature, so the fridge draws considerably more power while appearing to work perfectly normally.

Can a door gasket be cleaned instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Food residue and sticky buildup in the folds prevent the rubber from contacting the cabinet, and washing it with warm soapy water restores a good number of them. Only hardened, cracked or torn gaskets genuinely need replacing.

Why does frost keep building up in my freezer?

A leaking door seal is one of the two main causes -- humid air enters continuously and freezes on the cold surfaces. The other is a failed defrost system. Both are worth checking, as they produce similar-looking buildup.

My fridge door doesn't close by itself. Is that the seal?

More often it is the levelling. Fridges are designed to sit tilted very slightly backwards so the door swings closed under its own weight. On uneven flooring a forward tilt stops that, and adjusting the feet usually resolves it.

90-day service warranty, on every job.

If the exact same fault returns within 90 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Replaced parts also carry the supplier's own part warranty on top.
