The start relay and overload protector. Clipped onto the side of the compressor, this is what delivers the surge that gets it turning and what cuts power if it overheats. It is a small, inexpensive part and it is a common failure. The symptoms are exactly what you would expect from a dead compressor: a fridge that clicks every few minutes and never runs, or hums for a second or two then falls silent as the overload trips. A technician should test this before anything else. If someone quotes a compressor without having shown you a relay test, get a second opinion.
Winding tests. A compressor motor has start and run windings, and their resistance can be measured. Open or shorted windings, or a winding shorted to the casing, confirm genuine failure. This is an objective measurement, not a judgement call, and you are entitled to be shown it.
A seized compressor. Sometimes the motor is electrically sound but mechanically jammed. It draws heavy current and trips the overload immediately and repeatedly. That is genuine failure.
What actually kills compressors. Rarely age alone. More often it is moisture and acid left in the system by a badly done gas job, running for long periods against blocked condenser coils, or repeated hard starts from an unstable supply. That last one matters in areas with frequent voltage dips, and it is the argument for a stabiliser.
