In depth

A guide to fridge noises: which are normal and which are not

Fridges gurgle, tick, hum and occasionally crack, and most of that is entirely normal. Refrigerant moving through the capillary makes a gurgling or bubbling sound. Plastic components expand and contract with temperature and produce ticks and pops. The compressor hums when running. None of that needs fixing. What follows are the sounds that do.

Loud buzzing or rattling from the back. Usually the condenser fan. Its blade can be fouled by dust buildup or by something that has fallen behind the fridge, or its bearing can be worn. Since this fan is what keeps the compressor cool, it is worth attending to -- running without adequate condenser cooling shortens compressor life significantly.

A loud whirring that changes when you open the door. This is the evaporator fan inside the freezer, and the door switch usually stops it when the door opens. If it is noisy, the blade is often striking ice that has built up around it because the defrost system is failing. The noise is the symptom; the defrost fault is the cause, and left alone it also stops the fridge cooling properly.

Heavy vibration through the floor. The compressor sits on rubber mounts that isolate its vibration from the cabinet. When those perish, the vibration transfers into the body and then the floor. Related: a fridge not level, or touching a wall or a cabinet, will drum against it.

Rattling that comes and goes. Often the drip tray sitting loose above the compressor, a loose rear panel, or bottles vibrating against each other on a shelf. Genuinely trivial, and worth eliminating before assuming anything mechanical.

A repeated click every few minutes with no cooling. Not really a noise complaint -- that is the start relay or overload tripping, and it needs electrical diagnosis rather than a look at the fans.

A fridge that has recently become noticeably louder is worth having looked at, because the two most likely causes -- a failing condenser fan and an icing evaporator -- both damage other things if ignored.

FAQ

Refrigerator Noise Repair in Bangalore — frequently asked questions.

What fridge noises are normal?

Gurgling and bubbling from refrigerant moving through the system, ticking and popping as plastic parts expand and contract, and a steady hum while the compressor runs. All of these are expected and need no attention.

My fridge is much louder than it used to be. Should I worry?

It is worth checking. The two most common causes of a sudden increase are a failing condenser fan and an evaporator fan blade striking ice, and both cause further damage if left -- one shortens compressor life, the other stops the fridge cooling.

Why does the noise stop when I open the freezer door?

Because the door switch cuts the evaporator fan. If the noise disappears the moment the door opens, the fan is the source -- usually because its blade is hitting ice built up from a defrost system fault.

Can vibration noise just be the fridge's position?

Frequently, yes. A fridge that is not level, or that touches a wall or adjacent cabinet, transmits normal compressor vibration into whatever it is touching. Levelling it and leaving clearance on all sides often solves the problem entirely.

Is a clicking fridge that isn't cooling a noise problem?

No, that is an electrical fault rather than a mechanical one. Repeated clicking every few minutes without the compressor running is the classic sign of a failed start relay or a tripping overload protector.

30-day service warranty, on every job.

If the exact same fault returns within 30 days of the visit, we fix it again at no charge — written on your digital bill, not just promised verbally. Any part we replace carries a 6-month parts warranty on top.
